Unlost

Support

Unlost turns the map board at the trailhead into a live walking map: photograph it, pin two points it shares with Apple Maps, and walk it with your position. Everything stays on your iPhone, and no data is collected.

How do I get a good alignment?

Pick two spots that are easy to identify on both the photo and Apple Maps, such as trail crossings, bridges, car parks, or building corners, and choose points far apart, ideally near opposite corners of the board. The fit meter on the save screen tells you how well your points are spread, and you can adjust them any time with Fix Alignment.

How accurate is my position on the map?

Unlost shows a photograph of a map, aligned to the world as closely as your two points allow. Hand-drawn boards are often stylised or not to scale, so treat your dot as a guide. Your position is most trustworthy near the points you pinned. It is not a survey-grade map. Carry proper navigation in serious terrain, and always rely on official sources for safety-critical decisions.

Does the app work offline?

Your photographed maps, their alignments, and your GPS position all work without any connection. The Apple Maps imagery underneath needs a connection the first time an area is viewed; areas you’ve already looked at are usually available from the map cache. For remote trips, open your map and browse the area while you still have signal.

What can I photograph?

Anything flat that depicts real geography: painted trailhead boards, ranger-station leaflets, ski-piste diagrams, nature-reserve loops, campus and event maps. Straight-on photos with the whole map in frame align best.

Can I try it before a hike?

Yes. On first launch, tap Try a Sample Map to add a ready-aligned sample board so you can explore the whole flow from your couch.

My alignment looks off. How do I fix it?

Open the map and choose Fix Alignment (also available by long-pressing the map in your collection). Re-place either point. Your existing placements are kept, so you can nudge just one. Choosing better-separated points usually resolves most drift.

Does Unlost collect my data?

No. The app has no account, no analytics, no advertising, and no tracking. Your photos, alignments, and settings are stored only on your device. See the Privacy Policy for the full details.
